PAST SHOWS: PAUL AMEY
Until 1 Feb 2009
Paul Amey is a highly individual and talented sculptor working in steel, plastics and ceramics. His work is conceptually explorative and beautifully constructed, his influences far reaching - from Matisse to Wentworth.
Amey’s alchemy is a poetic response to the ‘mismatch’ of contemporary technology and his wonder at the natural world that pitches the viewer to explore different planes of existence. He is excited by the unpredictable magic of a seemingly incongruous dialogue. His sculptures are surreal, disconcerting, playful and often strangely wistful.
New works include Winterlake 2008, an ethereal silver branch crystallized on a frozen horizon with receptacles suspended like notes on a musical score. Waterfall 2008, a 3 meter aluminium inverted stem of lilies where human figures morph as stamens.
Trawler 2008, is lost or yoked to the crest of a standing black wave. Paul Amey has been working for twenty five years and has work in public and private collections in UK and abroad. He lives and works in Oxford.
